What’s smaller than a turntable, shaped like a VW Bus, and plays records by driving on them? Meet the Record Runner – an ingenious little gadget that’s as charming as it is polarizing.
For fans of classic Volkswagens who can’t swing the price of a six-figure Type 2 or the new all-electric ID. Buzz, this might be the next best thing. Priced at just $79.99, the Record Runner is a self-driving, palm-sized mini van that cruises along the grooves of your vinyl, playing music as it goes. It’s not your traditional turntable – and that’s exactly the appeal.
Originally developed by Sony in 1976 under the name Chorocco, this quirky device weighed just 111 grams and quickly earned nicknames like the Record Rider, Soundwagon, and the infamous “Vinyl Killer,” thanks to its tendency to wear down records faster than standard players. Despite its reputation, the novelty (and nostalgia) of watching a miniature VW bus spin circles around your favorite LPs has never worn thin.
The modern iteration, now manufactured by Stokyo, keeps the retro vibes alive but with some smart upgrades. Gone is the external side lever — the new on/off switch is tucked underneath, along with a high-low speed selector. Suspended silicone wheels help reduce record wear, while a replaceable Audio-Technica cartridge brings a touch of audiophile credibility. It also comes with an upgraded speaker-amplifier system, volume control, and pitch adjustment.
Battery life? About 90 minutes on two AAA batteries (not included). And unlike the original, the new Record Runner plays only 33-1/3 rpm records.
Officially licensed by Volkswagen, the Record Runner is currently available in Royal Blue for $79.99 via Stokyo’s site. Additional color options -including an Urban Outfitters-exclusive chrome model – are offered through Record Runner Japan, where prices range from $99.99 to $129.99 for a Bluetooth-enabled version. Both retailers are currently sold out, so if you’re eager to snag one, your best bet might be a local music shop.
Whether you’re a collector, a VW enthusiast, or just into cool audio gadgets, the Record Runner is a conversation piece that blurs the line between automotive charm and analog sound.
